Benefits of Having a Doula

Doulas work with mothers and partners to develop a vision for their birth experience, to discuss questions and concerns, and form a trusting relationship through which comfort and encouragement can be given during labor. Doulas are focused on making your birth experience feel safe, joyful, and empowering. While doulas do not provide medical care, we are familiar with birth-related procedures and medications, and can therefore assist in facilitating clear communication between you and your care provider.

Woman-to-woman support in childbirth is an ancient tradition, and the benefits of it are now well-documented. The Cochrane Pregnancy and Childbirth Group did a review* of 26 trials involving 15,858 women in 17 countries and found that women who had continuous one-on-one support:

  • Were more likely to have spontaneous vaginal birth

  • Were less likely to have a C-section or an instrumental vaginal birth (vacuum or forceps)

  • Were less likely to have negative feelings about their birth

  • Were less likely to use intrapartum analgesia

  • Had shorter labors

  • Were less likely to have a baby with a low 5-minute Apgar score
